Directions and parking

The Chemistry Department is very close to the city centre on Lensfield Road. For anyone coming by car, parking can be difficult. The Chemistry Department has a few visitor car parking spaces which can be booked (contact Dr. Glenn Carver for more details) but we cannot guarantee one will be available. However, unless you arrive early morning there is a good chance that a space might be available somewhere else in car park. Alternately, there are Pay & Display spaces on Lensfield Road itself, in front of the department, and to the rear of the department.

If you are coming by train, the department is about 15mins walk from the rail station or a short taxi ride. If walking, come out of the station and head up the road in front of you until you come to a T junction. Take a right turn towards the city centre (you are now on Hills Road). Walk about a mile or so and then at the cross-roads with the large church on your left, turn left into Lensfield Road. The chemistry department is then a short distance down the road.

By Road

Cambridge has good routes of access and is only an hours drive from London.

From the south-east, the best route is North up the M11. From the south-west, either use the M25 and M11 or use the A1(M) and then cross-country (dual carriageway most of the way) through Baldock and Royston on the A505.

From the North, the new A14 east-west link road is the best route. You can join this either from the A1 coming from the north-east, or from the M1 or M6 from the midlands or north-west.

By Rail

There are frequent trains from London to Cambridge with fast services every hour. Trains leave from King's Cross every 30 minutes. There are also trains from Liverpool St. station. Here is the current London-Cambridge train timetable.

From the North, you can change trains at Peterborough and proceed via Ely. However, this service is not particularly fast unless you happen to be lucky and catch one of the 'cross-country cruiser' services. Another option would be to stop at Stevenage (if possible) and catch one of the trains from London. Check with your local rail station for the best option.

By Air

The best way by far is to fly to Stanstead airport which is then only 30mins drive from Cambridge up the M11. Expect about £20 for taxi. Heathrow can be anything from 1hr 30mins to 2hrs depending on the traffic on the M25. Taxi fare can be anything from £50 (cheaper if prearranged).

Gatwick is also about 1hr 30mins where the subsequent road journey would be via the M23, then the M25 (East) and M11.

By Sea or Channel Tunnel

The nearest port is Harwich in Essex. From there, a car journey would be about 1.5 to 2hrs. There are no motorways from Harwich but the A14 is dual carriageway and quite fast.

From the Channel Tunnel, follow the road directions given above for travelling from the south-east.
