Centre for Atmospheric Science

Applying for PhD studentships or Post-Doctoral positions

Introduction

This page only has information regarding research opportunities in the Chemistry Department of the Centre. Please see the DAMTP WWW server and Geography WWW server for more information about research opportunities in those departments.

Lecturing staff in the Chemistry department have an interest in numerical modelling of atmospheric chemistry (both stratospheric and tropospheric) and measurements of atmospheric consituents and gas kinetics. For some examples of the current research underway in the group, please see our research activities page.

Post-doctoral positions

The research areas range from modelling using trajectory, to three-dimensional dynamical and chemical models, to building instruments for taking measurements of atmospheric chemical species, and to gas kinetic research.

If you would like to know more details of the research carried out within the group, or would like to enquire about Ph.D. or post-doc positions available then write to the appropriate member of staff given below. Please include your CV if you are applying. For some specific examples of ongoing research please see our research page.

Ph.D. Degrees

A number of Ph.D. positions are normally available each year for particular projects. Funding for UK students is normally available from the UK Research Councils. Also, a number of foreign higher degree students are in the group; funded either by their own country or through EEC capital mobility programme.

If you want to pursue a PhD place, then you should contact the University Teaching Officer you would like to work for (ie. Dr. Tony Cox, Prof. John Pyle, Dr. Rod Jones, Prof. Peter Haynes, Prof. Michael McIntyre or Prof. Hans Graf) directly. Informal enquiries can be sent to the CAS Science Coordinator, Dr. Glenn Carver.

Application forms

In order to apply for a studentship you will need to fill out an application form from the Board of Graduate Studies. For applications to the chemistry department please visit the webpage http://www-leeper.ch.cam.ac.uk/pgapp/index.html which gives information on how to apply and how to obtain the necessary forms and further information about the research in the chemistry department.

If you would like to apply for a Ph.D. in the Applied Maths Dept. then please visit the page http://www.maths.cam.ac.uk/postgrad/ for more information on how to apply.

Yyou can obtain the prospectus and application form by sending an e-mail to admissions@gradstudies.cam.ac.uk. The graduate prospectus can also be read on-line at the address http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/.

It is most important that applicants indicate on their application the type of research that they would like to do for their Ph.D. and the supervisors in that field that they would like to work with. A list of research fields and supervisors' research interests is given below and you are encouraged to contact the supervisor before making an application for more specific information. Application forms which do not have this information will generally be rejected by the Department.

Funding your degree

For full details of the funding available to UK, EU and Overseas students, please see the information provided at http://www-leeper.ch.cam.ac.uk/pgapp/funding.html. These pages contain information on the costs involved in studying at Cambridge. The Department of Chemistry has no funds which it can use to assist with these costs. Overseas students are generally either self-funded or have a scholarship from some source. Applicants for Overseas Research Studentship (ORS) award should note that these awards only pay the difference between the Home fee and the Overseas fee and are not sufficient on their own. Overseas students should also note the minimum language requirements for students whose native language is not English. (see http://www-leeper.ch.cam.ac.uk/pgapp/lang.html).

Research in the Centre for Atmospheric Science at the University of Cambridge

The University Teaching Officers (UTOs) who head the research groups in the Centre are: Dr. M.Kalberer, Prof. John Pyle and Dr Rod Jones in Chemistry, and Prof. Peter Haynes in DAMTP and Prof. Hans Graf in Geography. For more details about research (postdoc) and PhD opportunities, please contact the member of staff in the first instance or visit the research pages on this website for more examples of the kind of research underway.
