Director's News

The UGAMP bid for a further five years' support was considered by NERC's Atmospheric Sciences and Technology Board last October, and was rated (alpha five) as the BoardÕs top priority for funding. NERC appointed a Science Review Panel to consider the extent to which UGAMP had met its targets (as set out in the Implementation Plan), to assess the contribution of our work to the meteorological agencies, and to recommend a level of funding for the future programme. This review has taken place, and a highly favourable report (also rated alpha 5) was submitted to NERC. At its meeting on 22 February NERC Council decided to continue UGAMP at about the current level of funding, with the intention of continuing the programme for a further five years. The bid had requested an expansion of UGAMP, but NERC's budget, constraints and priorities did not allow for that.

Thanks to all of you for contributing to the success of the programme.

Editorial

Welcome to the new look of the UGAMP Newsletter. I hope the use of colour has not only improved the appeal of the newsletter but made some of the figures easier to view.

It is the intention that the newsletter will play a more prominent role in the promotion of UGAMP science. To this end, there will be some changes to the requirements of UGAMP groups for submission of articles. An editorial board has been suggested to oversee the submission and quality of articles. More about this from the UGAMP mailing lists in the coming months. In the meantime, the next issue of the newsletter will be due out in time for the UGAMP 1996 conference, to be held at Oxford.

As always, comments and suggestions (or praise!) to me at glenn@atm.ch.cam.ac.uk.
